  1. turbo. 205# (PR)

Not quite as easy as snatching the purse of geriatric on her deathbed, but at no time was I worried about being overwhelmed by my victim. The session opened with power snatches to heat the engine block and then progressed to the real deal. In the past, I’ve wasted valuable energy working to 1RM snatch efforts by starting at around 115#. Not this time McGoo. Power snatches at 135# then 165# and I diverted focus to full movement. As I’ve found through test runs, I can make four, maybe five strong lifts. Keeping that in mind, I proceeded: 185#, 200# (two attempts), finally 205# (three attempts). I debated continuing my path toward the observation deck, but the missed attempts had a compounding effect. Nonetheless, new heights are in sight. This lift requires complete concentration; your level of procedural proficiency dictates results, not strength.

I’d be remiss not addressing my footwear, as the video has elicited two separate inquires. Prior to this workout, I had never used Olympic weightlifting shoes. Always a believer in streamlining your gear, I figured they were just another piece of equipment I could do without. That’s true; O-lifts can be performed without them. However, I’d be lying if I said they didn’t make a sizeable difference. First, the raised heel alleviates stress on the hips, allowing a much easier decent into the deep squat. Second, stability with this lift is crucial, the flat bottom and wooden platform offers a solid landing base. While my standard battle dress, Chuck Taylor’s, are sufficient, I’m ordering a pair of Adidas weightlifting shoes. So much for not specializing.
