  1. The daunting reality of cross training so many endeavors and metabolic pathways is that one is inevitably going to reach a plateau. The learning curve is at its most precipitous in the embryonic stages of the game. Anyone can reach a baseline of efficiency but progressing beyond the normal adaptation requires precision training in a specific endeavor. Randomly practicing the Oly lifts or any other movement is not the best way to train for a PR. Breaking the baseline or default PR barrier requires an aggressive and diligent approach. Practicing a movement once a month is good for maintaining a random training schedule but expecting a PR is wishful thinking. This approach invariably beckons the question "what can I do to increase my clean and jerk or one mile run or fill in the blank?" The age-old answer still prevails. Do more of X, Y, or Z just like the top athletes do. When they ask the question it's because they've exhausted their fundamental resources, but when we ask the question it's because we use an alphabet soup approach to progress and have yet to establish any sound fundamentals. Most "secrets" to making progress are hidden in the veil of common sense and logic. If decreasing a mile time or increasing the clean and jerk is that important then it makes sense to orient training accordingly. Everyone wants to increase everything but when asked what changes are being made or what specific measures are taken the answer is usually none. This is because having a better clean and jerk or faster mile is nothing more than a preference and not a hardened goal. I would prefer to be more graceful but you won't find ballet lessons on the docket. It's just a preference. In order to find out what your true goals are have a good look at your training. If you can't find any then you probably don't have any. Train according to your goals and avoid getting mudsucked into wishful thinking. Find a location on the map and maintain the straight and narrow until you get there. Once you've conquered the village and seen the enemy driven before you, move on to the next town and do the same.
