Cruise control was disabled for this forlorn journey of self-deprivation. The lack of urgency was key to survival. With a double dose of resistance there was zero opportunity for throttling back and free- wheeling in neutral. Pace is very much determined by pitting the size of the motor against the load and terrain. Pushing the upper limit would reap an exponential toll in rest while going too slow would incite premature wear and tear. Although many times attempted, pushing the pace put me back in my lane like a slow car in the fast lane. As horsepower was slowly depleted by the insidious morning stroll, the otherwise all terrain, sport utility, armored personnel carrier was made to crawl across the finish line with his exhaust pipes between his legs.
