Two matches, two wins. First on submission, second on points. Mission was technically accomplished but satisfaction remains elusive. Last week's victory at naga was partially satisfying at best; in fact, it served more as a hunger stimulant than anything. While other players savored their wins I searched for another battleground; hence, the diamond state games. Walking into the musty smelling high school gym flipped a switch. Had I been a spectator it probably wouldn't have registered with my hypothalamus. It was the smell of work, competition, victory, and defeat. As the crowd and competitors took on the semblance of organization the chaos ensued across eight mats. The worst part? Waiting until you name is called. Warming up and staying as mentally ready as a mortar tube presents a challenge. Often times the duel is like a chess match, slow and methodical but I was determined to attack my opponent like a pit viper does his prey. Still lacking the technical competency to effortlessly tie my opponent in a pretzel, I had to default to aggression while depending on funds from the fitness account to cover the nearly bounced checks my mind writes. Having the physical capability coupled with a few basic options is reliable ammunition. In BJJ there are many levels of progression so that for every position there is an escape, sweep, or submission. My strategy is to work only the fundamentals, focusing on dominant position and working for points. The fusion between the software and the hardware will come with time. Continuing to compete will require training to a level that accelerates the instinct needed to gain more proficiency. Meanwhile, fitness and aggression serve to bridge the gap needed to stay alive. Back to the drawing board. Training resumes today.
