Crossfit has generally decried the employment of the bench press as part of the ideal regimen. My contention is that: 1. If it builds useful strength then I am going to use it and 2. Sometimes it just fits into the programming and staves off another rest day. If training exclusively for crossfit then it doesn't make much sense to employ the bench press considering it's only used in two or three wods. The other issue, not with benching every now and again but overemploying the movement, is that it may pack on unnecessary muscle, making one slower and top heavy. I use the movement because the benefit translates perfectly to practicing BJJ and considering my lack of solid technique I need everything I can get.
Ask the question, find the answer... "The Shop Chipper" under 6 min? Performed @ CFJAX 19OCT2009:
turbo. 158bw. rx. 5:11
I'll spare 324 one of my humble comments. Russ ran video, hopefully he'll post it. In an effort to be preemptive, no rest, no broken sets. Can be done under 5 min.
Nice job! There are really only two ways to improve; either eliminate rest or move your body faster. The former is the most difficult but sounds like you've succeeded. Even when we feel like we eliminate rest only the video will show the truth. It surprises me every time. We rest so much more than we think. From rest to no rest is a world of difference in levels of fitness. I think sprinting through fran is much easier than sprinting through a chipper. I do think the shop chipper was a better gage of fitness than the filthy fifty do to its shorter intervals. The 50 is too long to maintain a high sprint power output. We're gonna have to come up with a different prescription for turbo j. He might not be human.
i filmed everyone during the 530 session, including Turbo. had i known he would get close to sub-5, i would have strictly filmed him alone. even though i walked around filming others, you can tell by the lack of quality filming (i.e. uneven/shaky camera work) that i had eyes on him the entire workout. having said that, most of what was recorded is of him but i can attest there were no broken sets and no rest...in order for him to finish in the time he did, there was no way he could have.
