Houston...we have a problem...
A new smelling, carpeted, air conditioned "gym" the size of a hotel room (hence being a hotel gym), Fox News on the television, three treadmills and a rack of dumbbells. Unfortunately I have no wod to post today and it's not because I didn't train. I'm a firm believer in taking my own medicine and doing what I ask others to do, ergo; I'm stuck with packing material this week and refuse to post something that someone may do that hasn't been corroborated as pure fitness-stimulating poison. I realize that we have to improvise at times despite the nagging frustration of not getting our fix. When starting crossfit it is much easier because we get caught up in the mire of intensity and the flurry of oxidative wods. We think everything should be oxidative and that if we don't feel like we got a work out then we didn't get a work out. As we progress and migrate into a more precise approach to fitness the programming becomes more challenging. We work hard to rectify shortcomings like muted hips and other impediments to a solid execution of a movement. We set specific goals and train to accomplish them. I guess my point is that there used to be a lot I could do with a set of 50# dumbbells but now I'm sort of drawing a blank. Of course we can always sacrifice weight for the production of more force in developing a certain skill but.... I'm still drawing a blank. What can a set of 50# dumbbells do for my power lifts or Olympic lifts or Fran time? Can dumbbells do something that a barbell can't? Has anyone become uniquely fit with d-bells? Perhaps tomorrow's 50# d-bell wod will be worth posting.

Tabata Mash Up: 50# DB Concentration Curls & 50# DB Weighted Calf Raises
ReplyDeleteIn some circles, I'm considered a programing genius. God's speed.
I like all the videos you been posting lately. That's cool that you will be back in Vegas in December. We will be in our new box by then. Looking forward to destroying another one of your sick workouts! I woulda done:
ReplyDelete12-9-6
50lb db manmakers
db handstand pushups
50lb db pulllup
took your challenge today:
ReplyDelete1/4 mile on treadmill @ 12 mph or 1::15 (however, most hotel t-mills will only go up to 10 mph or 1::30)
21x 50 lbs dumbell thrusters(100 total lbs.)
21x dead hang pull-ups
1/4 mile
15x thrusters
15x pull-ups
1/4 mile
9x thrusters
9x pull ups
total time: 8::19
note: 1::15 1/4 normally isn't too hard, but having a treadmill force that fast of a pace actually adds a little difficulty to the workout for sure. I have had to do workouts with t-mills for a while since i cant run outside in some of the countries' hotels i have stayed in.

You're right, the oly lifts and Fran will have to wait. But then again, it's an example of the real world, things aren't always as we wish and adaption is the only answer.
ReplyDeleteSounds like an opportunity to work on and test the mental side of training. My first thought was a little SMMF ala Gym Jones. Something like 100 Renegade Man Makers @ 50lb dumbbells should test not only your physical fitness but your mental fitness as well. (can't do RMM with a barbell) That movement is second to none when it comes to being stuck with only a pair of dumbbells and the monotony of 100 in a row will be a challenge. It would be difficult to keep going and finish them all.
Interested to see what happens...
All good suggestions, except for Turbo J (but biceps curls were considered). Man Makers are always the default d-bell exercise. I didn't do them because yesterday I did 300 d-bell push ups/rows and wasted my upper body.
ReplyDeleteClint it is possible to do a butchered barbell version of the man maker. Starting with the bar at waist, drop to the ground, kick the feet back, do a push up, bring the feet back up, deadlift the bar, bend over do a row, then clean the bar up, and press. The better exercise is the burplift, an old wod from cfjax. 100 for time. 135# d-lift with a burpee type push up at the bottom. I think there is a vid still out there. Yep here it is, in the very early days of the gyms inception.

The "Bar Maker" sounds like a good challenge. Thanks for the link. I've seen that one and have always thought of doing it, maybe soon.
